The prion diseases are characterized by showing a broad spectrum of phenotypes with different clinical and neuro- pathological presentations. Detection of the prion protein is the marker used as a tool for making the definite diagnosis in these neurodegenerative diseases. Its presence may be detected by immunohistochemical and biochemical techniques. On immuno- histochemical studies the prion protein shows three types of staining: as plaques of PrP-amyloid, perivacuolar and diffuse- synaptic.
