Introduction and aims. The existence of prolonged latency of the P3 wave of the P300 potential and, less frequently, the N2 wave have been described in cognitive deterioration. No modifications of the N1 and P2 waves have been reported. The purpose of this study is to determine the moment in which this prolongation begins and on which level it is most significant. Patients and methods. 45 patients with cognitive deterioration, i.e. with pathological P300 potential, and 45 healthy volunteers were selected from all the studies conducted over the last four years. Subjects were paired according to sex, age and level of schooling. The potentials were obtained using a tonal odd-ball paradigm (1000-2000 Hz, proportion 5:1), in the Cz-M1 derivation. Results. No differences were observed in the latency of the N1 wave. We found a prolongation of P2 (p= 0.007025), which was more marked in N2 (p= 4.078E-10) and in P3 (p= 2.022E-12). The greatest difference in peak-to-peak times was found in P2-N2 (p= 4.467E-8), which represents an 80% prolongation of the control value. It was lower for N2-P3 (p= 3.604E-6) and N1-P2 (p= 0.0113). Conclusion. The disorder starts between N1 and P2, and its greatest effect is produced between P2 and N2. As a result an important part of the prolongation of the P3 latency is generated in the earlier stages of the genesis of this potential.
