INTRODUCTION Gabapentin (GBP) is one of the latest generation of antiepileptic drugs, but its effect on children’s sleep is unknown. OBJECTIVES. To assess the effect of GBP on the nocturnal polysomnograph (PSGn) in children with secondarily generalized partial epilepsy, and also its anticonvulsant effect.
PATIENTS AND METHODS Eight boys and four girls aged between 8 and 12 years, diagnozed as having secondarily generalized partial epilepsy, without neurological changes, were assessed as to response (RR) to monotherapy with GBP and particularly its effect on PSGn. The first recording of a waking EEG and videoPSGn was made before starting treatment, and a second recording made six months after starting treatment. Since the two samples were nonindependent random groups, Student’s t was obtained after obtaining the difference between similar variables.
RESULTS Following treatment, the study of nocturnal sleep in the sample group showed significant reduction in the latency of sleep, increase in the slower phasses of the second and third cycles, reduction in waking whilst asleep and in the stillness index. The average RR (0.18) and standard deviation (0.07) showed a significant reduction in seizures and in the number of paroxystic discharges on the waking EEG, in parallel.
